| So this is going to sound crazy, but I actually forgot how much I love libraries. I know, right? Me, of all people, forgetting what a wonderful place a library can be. I've spent the last 2 and a half hours in the Norlin Library on campus, looking up sources for a paper, and I've continually had to stop myself from snagging from the shelves books completely different than the ones I need. There's just so much fascinating literature within reach! And the books I let myself get (because they apply to my paper) are also fascinating. So now I'm excited about writing this paper, all about Stesichoros (the ancient Greek poet of whose works we only have fragments) and Helen of Troy and Anne Carson's "Autobiography of Red." And from skimming parts of the books I'm going to use, I thought up a great argument, about why Carson frames her poem around Stesichoros and his penchant for turning conventional poetic and epic standards on their heads just as he turned adjectives all inside-out, and about Helen as dwelling between the boundaries of things and how her symbolic status as both goddess and whore transcends the ancient to touch on modern ideas of femininity and feminism, and about Geryon and Hercules and how they are defined and what makes Geryon like a volcano and why that affinity is important. Anyway, it's going to be great. If I ever have time to write it like I want to. Man, I love libraries. | | |
| I know, I know, shut up. I've been busy.
It's funny, I know I haven't updated this thing in forever, but suddenly I can't think of anything worth saying. I've been busy, insanely busy. Classes, homework, work... it just goes on and on filling up every day and keeping me stressed. I don't really have any stories to tell either. I mean, okay, I locked my keys in my car (in the ignition, with the radio on... *sigh*) in Denver when I met my parents and Alex there last week. Dad and Alex spent about half an hour with a coat hanger getting my door open. And I went on a date with a guy who later got a bit freakish on me, and I gave a birthday boy a kiss. But mostly I just rotate between coffee, the bus, Greek, Latin, poetry, the bus, coffee, Greek, Latin, the bus, Linguistics, coffee, Greek, Latin, Philosophy, and more coffee and one more bus ride. And lots of walking, too. And on weekends I keep track of my drunk roommates -- generally entertaining, but sometimes irritating. I should really be doing homework now (or sleeping), but I just can't focus on Greek anymore. | | |
| Hey everyone! Sorry I haven't posted in a while, like everybody else
I've been crazy busy. Finals were pretty intense this semester,
especially since my last day of finals (Wed. the 20th), there was a
huge blizzard in Colorado. We got 32 inches in Boulder. I had to walk
home through the storm that afternoon because the buses had stopped
running while I was still on campus. Oh, and they never closed campus
for the storm; finals were "optional" but campus was not closing and
nothing was being cancelled. Craziness. I did finally get home for
Christmas, though. I had to drive through another blizzard on Christmas
Eve to get there and it took me almost twice as long as it usually
does, but I arrived. Then, about midnight on Christmas, Mom, Dad,
Bryanna and I left to drive to Dallas, TX to see my older brother,
Tyler, his wife Tiffany, and their three daughters Autumn, Heidi and
Claire. We had a really good time with them. It was the first time I'd
seen then since last April, and they're so much fun. Autumn and Heidi
are as crazy as ever (Heidi told her daddy that she couldn't put
something away because she didn't have any hands...) and it was a
lot of fun. We left on Saturday the 30th to drive home to Colorado -- I
had to work, and Bryanna had to get home to see some friends. So we get
to Amarillo and... all the highways are being closed because of yet
another blizzard. So we try to find a hotel room in Amarillo, but there
is absolutly nothing available. So we go on to the next town, Dumas,
and there's still nothing available, and Tyler is checking the internet
and calling places from Dallas and finds out that the next town up,
Dalhart, which is the very last place you can get to, also has
absolutely nothing available and they were sending people to emergency
shelter. So we find the emergency shelter in Dumas -- it's a church
activity center, and it's very ... unappealing. But we were glad to
have shelter. Then we went to find some dinner, and there was this
little Mexican place nearby and when we asked for news about the roads,
the owner came out and chatted with us. And then he offered to let us
stay at his house with him, his wife and his family while we were
stranded. It was crazy and totally unexpected. So we ended up staying
with this family for two days until the roads opened, and became good
friends with them and they're going to come visit us this summer. We
finally got back to Colorado yesterday at about 5 in the evening; we
had to go south through New Mexico to find open roads (the roads in
Texas were supposed to be open yesterday morning, but for some reason
they still had roadblocks up). So those were my Holiday adventures this
year. I hope you all had a merry Christmas and a happy New Year, and
that it was less crazy than mine.

| My niece was born today!! Her name is Claire Aurelia and she's a blonde, so now my brother is the father of a redhead, a brunette and a blonde. I'm so excited, and I just wish I was there to say hello. | | |
